Following the terrorist hit on MI5, a new counter terrorism plan called Operation Damocles was set into motion. This gave Section 13 a free hand to establish whatever infrastructure it felt was appropriate to respond to the rising threat from mutants in the UK. The result combined the counter terrorism aspects of MI5 with an additional paranormal investigation role to subtly assist local law enforcement in situations where mutant abilities have previously thwarted conventional policing methods.

Established during the Second World War, Military Intelligence, Section 13 was one of a total of nineteen intelligence sections providing information on Nazi Germany and her allies. In particular, Section 13 dealt with the occult aspects of Nazi research, particularly focusing on their search for religious artifacts and their ambitions towards breeding an Aryan race of superhumans. Amongst their early investigations, they discovered the first indications of what was eventually understood to be mutation, and the x-gene.

After the end of the war, Section 13 continued to operate throughout the Cold War: another aspect of the mutual preparedness of the various superpowers to go to war with each other on any level. Rather than aiming towards a supersoldier however, Section 13's members were trained more as covert operatives and secret agents, which could be deployed invidivually or in small teams.

Section 13 was retired in the early nineties, with the focus of threats and conflicts shifting from a Cold War standoff to the more overtly military operations of the Gulf War and other conflicts in the Middle East. Because of the covert nature of Section 13, it was felt that they could not be appropriately deployed in those situations.

Almost twenty years later, the political climate had changed; particularly with the Americans and British pioneering a "War on Terror". After MI5's secure database was hacked and various highly classified Section 13 documents were stolen, the cyber-terrorists responsible began hunting down and killing the retired Section 13 operatives across the world. Very few survived; in order to combat the terrorists, and also to respond to a swathe of mutant-related criminal and terrorist acts in Britain over recent years, the government reactivated Section 13: this time as a subdivision of the Security Service (MI5).

Originally, the headquarters of Section 13 was at Pitreavie Castle, near Fyfe in Scotland. However, the facility eventually closed in 1994, and has subsequently been converted into residential housing. As a subsidiary of MI5 after it was reactivated, Section 13 was given workspace at MI5's headquarters in Thames House.

Operation Pelius

Named for a weapon from Greek mythology, Pelius is the codename of an MI-13 task force that operated during the Second World War.

Operation Damocles

Named in reference to the Sword of Damocles, Operation Damocles is the codename of a special operations project run by MI-13 during the Cold War. It used a combination of specially trained military officers and individuals with supernatural abilities, in order to investigate and combat threats to the United Kingdom from persons of a similar nature: the figurative sword hanging over the head of Great Britain that it's codename references.

The operation had it's headquarters in Scotland, in a secret bunker constructed beneath RAF Pitreavie Castle - at the time, the base was used to coordinate NATO, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Search and Rescue operations for the entire North Atlantic.

Many of those part of and encountered by Operation Damocles were what we would now call "mutants". Notable former members of Damocles include Walter Harriman, Nathan Godfrey, and a mysterious individual known only as "John".

Notable Members

  • Walt Harriman - one of the original members of Section 13 from the Cold War, Harriman is now the Commander of the project codenamed Operation Damocles. Codenamed Longshot, Harriman's mutation manifests in an almost infallable accuracy with any sort of projectile or thrown weapon.

Other Associates

  • Jace Harriman - the eldest son of Walt Harriman, Jace is a lawyer working for the Crown Prosecution Service: given his association with Section 13, he is often called upon to prosecute cases where mutant abilities have been involved. His mutant ability allows him to telekinetically accelerate objects towards him, but the ability is only one-dimensional. His ability considered to be like gravity, Jace has been unofficially given the nickname Slingshot to echo his father and sister.
  • Kat Harriman - twenty-two years old and the youngest child of Walt Harriman, Katrina recently graduated from studying drama at university. Because of her father's depression, her brother Jace became her legal guardian throughout her teens. Her ability allows her to telekinetically cause the molecules in an object to vibrate, thus causing it to heat up. Because of this, and because of her father's codename, she inherited the nickname Hotshot.
