Most of the Justice Society members retire, either voluntarily or under duress. Checkmate is founded in secret by a mix of government agents and former Justice Society members, to continue the JSA's mission in a covert fashion, outside of legal channels.
  • Kent Nelson dies. Requiring a host in order to continue acting in the world, Nabu approaches Hector Hall to become the new Doctor Fate. However, Nabu refuses to allow Hector to ever remove the helmet, effectively hijacking his body as a vessel. This causes a rift between Doctor Fate and Hector's father, his former Justice Society comrade Carter Hall.
