Originally formed as a Z-95 Headhunter unit during the early days of the Rebel Alliance, Valkyrie Squadron was one of the progenator units of the hit-and-fade tactics that came to epitomize Rebel activities. They also participated in several major battles, including flying at Ton-Falk and Kashyyyk; and ultimately became one of the first units selected to fly the new RZ-1 A-Wing Interceptor. During the Battle of Endor, many Valkyries flew as part of Green Squadron.

With the bulk of The Wheel's air group assigned to the larger Challenger, Valkyrie Squadron was deployed alone aboard the Valiant, occasionally joined by Rogue Squadron (or other units) as part of scouting and vanguard missions.
