Born in Midway City, Carter Hall is a Professor of Archaeology, a retired adventurer, and the current owner of Sherwood Florists. He is the secret identity of the (retired) vigilante known as Hawkman, a former member of the government agency Checkmate, and is also the latest reincarnation of Prince Khufu Kha-Tarr: a man from Ancient Egypt cursed to be reborn to fall in love with his béloved and then watch her die again and again for all of eternity.
Carter Hall was plagued throughout his youth with flashes of past lives and memories. Originally these haunted him as vivid dreams, but eventually they began to bleed through into his consciousness, and influence his personality. Memories of Khufu led him to study history, archaeology, and in particular Egyptology while others of life as a medieval knight and a Wild West gunslinger lent him a variety of skills in combat.
Deciding to put these skills to use, Carter began life as a vigilante when, while working as a curator at the local museum, he helped to thwart a theft of several priceless artifacts. He constructed the persona of Hawkman in order to continue his work, and went on to fight not only criminals in Midway City, but also all across the United States as a member of the Justice Society of America.
During his time with the Society he met - and married - the latest incarnation of Khufu's love, Chay-Ara: an archaeologist named Shiera Sanders. Having fought at his side through many of his past lives, Shiera became his partner in crime fighting as Hawkgirl. Their partnership came to an abrupt end however when Shiera was killed at the hands of the villain Vandal Savage.
Shiera was not the only member of the Society to be killed. Both Larry Lance and Dinah Drake died, leaving their infant daughter without a family. Keeping a promise he had made to Dinah, he adopted the child, raising her as his own with no knowledge of who her real parents had been, in the hopes of keeping her safe and preventing her from getting any ideas of following in their footsteps.
For the decades that followed, Carter lived as close to a normal life as he could manage, though it wasn't made easy: former comrades from the Justice Society frequently enlisted his aid on their continued exploits, and for a time he served as an agent of Checkmate at their insistance. As his age has begun to reduce his effectiveness however, he now largely focuses on his academic work, and on running Sherwood Florists, which he inherited from Dinah Drake.
Now approaching sixty, Carter has lived far longer in this life than he has in any other. Hoping to provide his next incarnation with more than mere flashes of memory, he has begun to research the past lives of Prince Khufu, with the unsuspecting assistance of Gotham librarian Barbara Gordon.
